California Veterans Treatment Court Representation

As experienced civilian military attorneys with a proven track record in defending military veterans, we understand the unique challenges you may face when navigating the legal system. Our mission is to provide you with comprehensive support and representation throughout the Veterans Treatment Court program.

What is Veterans Treatment Court?

Veterans Treatment Court offers a distinct path for veterans with misdemeanor and felony convictions, tailoring treatment specifically to their needs. This specialized court program ensures close monitoring through regular court hearings, while also providing support from Veterans Affairs and community-based organizations. Participants are incentivized for their successes, and there are consequences for non-compliance with the program’s rules. It’s important to note that only veterans whose crimes are a result of mental illness related to their military service are eligible for the Court.

Collaborative Effort for Success

The Veterans Treatment Court program is a collaborative effort involving various stakeholders committed to helping veterans rebuild their lives. This includes the Superior Court, District Attorney’s Office, Defense Bar, treatment providers, and the esteemed California Veterans Legal Task Force. By working together, we strive to ensure that every participant receives the necessary resources and guidance to address mental health issues and reintegrate as productive citizens.

Transformative Programs for Lasting Change

At our firm, we understand the complexities veterans face when transitioning from military to civilian life. Many veterans encounter challenges upon returning home from deployments, requiring support to readjust to civilian life, cope with injuries, and address psychological problems. These difficulties can sometimes lead to substance abuse or encounters with the law. Our goal is to carefully screen and place participants in programs specifically designed to equip them with the tools needed to treat mental health issues and facilitate their successful reintegration into society.

Eligibility and Screening Process

To be considered for the Veterans Treatment Court program, defendants must meet certain criteria. This includes having prior or current military service and being able to demonstrate a mental health issue related to their service, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), or military sexual trauma (MST). While combat trauma is not always a prerequisite, there must be a clear connection between the criminal offense and a military-related mental health issue. It’s important to note that cases involving arson, sex registration, or prison sentences are not eligible for the program.

To ensure a fair and thorough evaluation, each case must undergo screening and approval by a selection committee. This committee convenes twice per month to review cases and determine their suitability for the Veterans Treatment Court program. Our experienced team is well-versed in navigating this process and can provide you with the guidance and representation needed to present your case effectively.
